An Invitation to “Red” the gallery
By Bonnie Sherer
Long ago Red was associated with the Earth element; fire, and since red is the color of blood, it has historically been associated with sacrifice, danger and courage. Today red, one of three primary colors found on far end of the color spectrum is often associated with emotion. The many shades of red represent excitement, heat, anger, romance, love, passion, and danger. In China and many other Asian countries red is the color of happiness.
With that little primer on red The Art Center staff would like to announce our plans for a themed community gallery simply titled, “Red”. All of the above information had nothing to do with our decision to put together this gallery though. Rather the idea came from my current experience in the pottery department building my first glazes. Red glaze has been elusive. I’ve tried to create reds only to have them turn out green or gray. So, red has been a challenge. My thought was put that challenge to task and set a date to have created my own “reds”.
Every good challenge deserves a reward, right? Here’s our plan. This October we are planning a special event. “Red, the Gallery” and we want you to join us. All mediums are welcomed with each entry showcasing the artist’s individual representation of the color red. We are asking that you sign up your entry by September 10th. This will give us time to begin the planning for space and presentation. The staff does reserve the right to refuse work unsuitable or offensive, just saying…
I did say special event. So let’s just say all things red are possible. Let’s start with a red carpet entrance, red velvet cupcakes, a red wine tasting, red flowers and dresses for the gals. We will continue to build our plans, but you need to begin to build yours, too. So here’s your invitation, Red is coming to The Art Center this October and we’re hoping you will join us. It is sure to be ridiculously fun.
